We don't even know the facts about the Tucson shooting, and already calls for the Fairness Doctrine abound! It would be interesting to see what % of the media coverage discusses the responsibility of the individual who pulled the trigger. It seems the vast majority tries to find a "societal" problem like political debate, vitriol, ads, maps, imagery, words, etc. and certain politicians or media figures to blame. And now, some are calling for legislation to protect us from what might happen, if we are allowed to hear such speech in the future.
Really? This shows what some in the ruling class and the media truly think of us commoners in the masses and also how important they think themselves. We, as a whole, are nothing but dim-witted, incapable, non-thinking groups, not individuals, who can be provoked to do about anything. Do they really think their words are THAT important to us? Do they really think we place THAT much stock in what they say or do? Do they think we hang on every word, following them like some sort of God? They must think that. They must think themselves so important, so powerful, so influential our free will disappears, and we become mindless followers willing to kill others because of what they say. Why else would we need to regulate speech? Why else would they outlaw symbols? What they are really saying is they fear the actions of the commoners, if they are allowed to hear certain words or phrases, see certain types of images, or be exposed to certain kinds of figurative language. But I ask, "Who will decide what's allowed and what's not? Will the types of words, symbols, and language shift with the political winds? Will it all become 'hate speech' or maybe 'death speech'?"
There has always been, and will always be, Crazy. There has always been, and will always be, Evil. There has always been, and will always be, Stupid. You cannot legislate this out of individual people. The fact they think we believe they can, is extremely revealing.
